According to the IRS, I owed $3,775.00. The reason being that (get this) I received tax credits to lower my Health Care costs. I switched from Health Care to Medicare in August, when I turned 65. But (supposedly) because I made 400 times the poverty level to receive tax credits, I have to pay the tax credits back.
Last year, $13,000.00 working part time and received $9,000.00 from Social Security. Social security is non taxable as long as I don't earn over $16,000.00. How can $13,000.00 be 400 percent higher than the poverty level? Beats me, but I paid the amount they said I owed anyway.
My late Father always said that you can't fight city hall. True, and the U.S. government is a lot bigger.
So I grumble, but I comply. They sent Al Capone to prison for tax evasion and I am too old to serve time now.
Lesson learned and life goes on.
