50 years ago:

1. A slut was a very bad thing to be, degrading.
2. If a girl became pregnant, she had two choices: marry the guy (or else for him!) or move out of town. Staying in school was not an option.
3. People (especially girls) were very concerned with having a good reputation.
4. If you got into a fight with someone, there were rules. If you knocked someone down, you asked them if they'd had enough and would offer to help them up. No kicking someone on the ground, and no friends jumping in. Friends were only allowed to break a fight up.
5. If stopped by the police, you answered yes sir or no sir. No one carried guns except criminals.
6. People respected authority, whether it was in school or at work.
7. If you lost a game, you shook the other guy's hand and said good game. Anyone acting up while playing, whether a star player or not, went to the bench.
8. You were taught to be polite: saying please and thank you. Holding doors open for both genders.
9. People took responsibility and apologized when they were wrong. They accepted punishment without wimpering or crying.
10. Everyone in your neighborhood could punish you for acting up or call your parents. Children could play outdoors because grownups kept an eye out for trouble.

That's enough for now.
