Best voice in rock

Going on pure vocal ability only, who do you think has the best voice in rock, even if you weren't a fan?

I could never nail down one, but have to mention David Coverdale, Ronnie James Dio, Paul Rodgers, and Bruce Dickinson...

I'll give Halford his due, his style works great for metal, but I don't think he compares in vocal purity to the likes of Bruce Dickinson or David Coverdale. For example, who could pull off an acapella version of the national anthem better?

And I don't know squat about octaves, but I saw Michael Sweet hit notes on stage that literally blew out the microphone. I mean they had to bring him a new one...

Bruce and Rob are true legends but still, I'd vote for Ronnie James Dio.
I've never heard that same passion in any other voice. To me, Ronnie was definitely the best heavy metal / hard rock singer of all time.

Since nobody else has, I have to mention Brad Delp of Boston. The next time you hear one of their songs, keep in mind that's also Brad on the background vocals as well.

And let's throw one out to Freddie Mercury also. All those layered vocals on Bohemian Rhapsody were him.

My favorite vocals were Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains when they harmonized. Amazing sound. Currently, I like the vocal range of the lead singer of Avenged Sevenfold, but they have been hit or miss on song quality. The lead singer of Rise Against also has a distinctive voice and pretty decent lyrics.

I was wondering how far down these threads I'd have to look to find Rise Against / Tim McIlrath mentioned. His voice is probably one of the most unique that I've ever heard, regardless of whether he's playing with Rise Against or not. I've heard some of his collaborations with other bands, and his voice adds so more much awesomeness to any song that he is featured on.

Freddie Mercury
Steve Perry
James Christian

I think the most influential on me as a singer are Coverdale, Mercury and Perry.
