reasons to be cheerful
When I'm really low my dogs seem to know and come and cuddle up to me.....that always makes me smile.

What's the thing that makes you smile even when you are really down?

Hearing my kids say "love ya momma", watching my other half smile or laugh, my cat cuddling up or meowing at me, cooking something that blows my other half away (he is a better cook than me by far lol), the sun, spring time, new books, a walk at sunset, seeing a picture of Lady (my dog who passed away in November) and remembering her to name a few smile

Stinky, our musk turtle, lived. We were away for several days, and she must have gotten an arm stuck in a filter. She was trapped underwater, perhaps for several days, unable to breathe. Musk turtles cannot breathe underwater. When we pulled her from the tank, she seemed lifeless: no breath, no detectable respiration, eyes open, pupils apparently fixed and dilated. I screamed. My husband put the turtle on an inclined board (so water could dribble from of its mouth...none did), vaselined her unblinking eyes, pushed her non-responsive arms into her chest (=turtle respiration), and set up a basking light at about 90°F, to raise her metabolism. For about an hour she just lay there...seemingly dead. Then she began taking these hideous, heaving, open-mouthed breaths, about one a minute, that sounding as though, if she weren't dead, she would be soon.

Long story short, 12 hours later she was moving, slowly and clumsily, around a hospital tank we'd set up for her: high temp, low water. About a week later, she began eating a little, but moved in the water like a bobbe-headed spastic who'd had a stroke. Two weeks later, she was her old self again. Lively, interactive, hungry, adventurous, eager to bask and play...in short, as if nothing happened, if you ignored the peeling outer layer of her skin which died under the heat lamp and is peeling only very slowly.

The story of Phoenix. It's amazing how wondrous things can occur even when all reasonable hope for them has passed. She's swimming at the edge of her tank even now, saying come play with me.

The astonish recover has certainly cheered me. I have turtles in part because I expect them to be like gods: beings that live forever, or at least longer than I do.

There is only love. All the world's a stage and everything else is but fleeting illusion.
