Going Electric, EV, Prius, Leaf, Tesla

I have long been into alternative power or energy. I had a solar hot water heating system installed on (the now ex's) home over a decade ago. Very nice to have low water heating bills.
I am now at the point where the idea of an EV is front and center. With the possible free charging to be had and cars that can make it to and from work on one charge, maybe it is time.
I have been looking at a used Leaf, or perhaps a Prius plug in (the range on these is super short) I have yet to find a decent equation as to calculate the real return or value that an EV could give you.
Any thoughts on this?
